They are central to nuclear energy and technology, with plutonium, americium, and curium among the well-known actinides. Their chemistry is complicated by radioactivity, multiple oxidation states, and handling hazards.

Comparison highlights both similarities and differences. Both series are f-block, share certain electronic trends, and exhibit complex bonding and spectroscopy. However, lanthanides are generally less radioactive and have more stable isotopes, while actinides are predominantly radioactive and possess significant nuclear applications and risks.
