The concept describes planning and executing exercise programs over extended periods—weeks to months or longer—with an emphasis on steady progression, recovery, and sustainability rather than rapid, short-term gains. The term is used in Norwegian-language contexts to discuss strategic development of physical capacities, skills, and performance readiness.

Its core principles include periodization (organizing training into macro-, meso-, and microcycles), progressive overload (gradually increasing stress), specificity (training that matches target tasks), recovery and sleep, and nutrition. Monitoring tools such as session-rated perceived exertion, heart rate, performance tests, and training logs help adjust plans to the individual.

Implementation typically involves multi-month blocks, with planned variation in volume and intensity across cycles. Training sessions are organized to alternate higher- and lower-stress days, with deload weeks to sustain adaptation. Peak performance is scheduled for a specific event or phase, following a longer preparatory period.
