Laminaattipäällysteitä, commonly known as laminate flooring, are a type of synthetic flooring product. They are manufactured by fusing together multiple layers under high pressure. The core of a laminate floor is typically made of a composite wood product, often high-density fiberboard (HDF). The decorative layer, which provides the visual appearance, is a high-resolution photographic image. This image can mimic a wide variety of materials, such as wood, stone, or tile, offering significant design flexibility. The top layer, known as the wear layer, is a transparent protective coating, usually made of melamine resin. This wear layer is crucial for durability, offering resistance to scratches, stains, and fading.

Laminate flooring is known for its ease of installation, often featuring a click-lock system that allows planks to be fitted together without adhesives. This makes it a popular choice for DIY projects. Its affordability compared to natural materials like hardwood or stone is another significant advantage. Maintenance is generally straightforward, requiring regular sweeping or vacuuming and occasional damp mopping. However, laminate is not waterproof, and prolonged exposure to moisture can cause swelling and damage to the core. This limitation makes it less suitable for very wet areas like bathrooms or basements without specific waterproof variants. Despite this, laminate flooring remains a widely used and practical option for many residential and commercial spaces.
