Lainanhakemus is the Finnish term for a loan application, the formal request that an individual or business submits to a financial institution to obtain credit. The application constitutes the first step in the credit assessment process and typically includes personal or corporate identifying information, details of the requested loan amount, purpose, and desired repayment terms. Lainanhakemus forms part of the broader home‑loan ("asuntolainanhakemus") or business loan ("yrityslainanhakemus") procedures used by banks, credit unions, and other lenders.

When a consumer writes a standard Lainanhakemus, the document is usually accompanied by supporting documentation such as income statements, employment contracts, bank statements, and, in the case of a mortgage, property valuation and ownership papers. For a business applicant, additional documents are required, including balance sheets, profit and loss accounts, tax returns, and a detailed business plan. The lender reviews the borrower’s credit history through a credit report ("luottotietorekisteri") and may also consider external data such as debt‑to‑income ratio. In Finland, the Finnish Credit Information System (Luottotietojärjestelmä) aggregates credit data to aid lenders in making consistent decisions.

The processing time for a Lainanhakemus varies by institution but generally ranges from a few days for unsecured consumer loans to several weeks for secured loans such as mortgages. Once the application is approved, the lender issues a "lainasopimus", a contract outlining the terms, interest rate, amortization schedule, and any collateral obligations. If the application is declined, the borrower receives written feedback, often citing reasons such as insufficient income, high existing debt, or inadequate collateral. Finnish regulation requires lenders to provide clear, written explanations for refusals and to uphold the principles of fair treatment and transparency in the credit market.
