Lagerführung, literally “warehouse management” in German, denotes the planning, organization, and control of the storage, movement, and information of goods in a warehouse and across a supply chain. It covers inbound processing, storage, order picking, packing, outbound shipping, and returns handling, as well as the management of stock levels, warehouse layout, and capacity utilization. The goal is to ensure availability, accuracy, and timely fulfillment while minimizing costs.

Key activities include inventory control, slotting, and layout optimization; procedures for cycle counting, stock reconciliation, and FIFO or FEFO for perishable items. Efficient Lagerführung seeks to reduce travel distances, shorten handling steps, and improve lead times. It also involves cross-docking, kitting, and reverse logistics to support varied business models and seasons.

Technology plays a central role. Modern Lagerführung relies on Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) integrated with ERP and transportation management systems. Barcoding or RFID enables real-time stock visibility, while automation such as automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) and autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) can increase throughput. Data analytics support demand forecasting, replenishment, and slotting decisions.

Performance is measured with metrics such as order accuracy, on-time shipment, inventory turnover, fill rate, and dock-to-stock time. Common challenges include demand variability, space constraints, shrinkage, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety. In German-speaking contexts, Lagerführung is a core function of logistics and supply chain management, often implemented through dedicated staff and specialized software.
