Ladderlacing

Ladderlacing is a shoe-lacing technique in which the laces run horizontally between opposite eyelets, creating a series of parallel rungs connected by vertical segments along the sides of the shoe. This pattern produces a ladder-like appearance and is a form of bar-lacing, distinct from the common criss-cross lacing.

In practice, the pattern is created by threading the lace straight across the shoe from one eyelet to the corresponding eyelet on the other side, then running the lace upward along the edge to the next pair of eyelets, and repeating for all rows. The result is a series of horizontal sections (the rungs) connected by relatively vertical runs on the sides, with no diagonal crossings.

Ladder lacing is often chosen for its even distribution of tension across the shoe top, which can reduce localized pressure and wear on the lacing area. It can be more secure for boots or shoes subjected to lateral movement and is used by hikers, motorcyclists, and others who value a firm hold and long-lasting lacing. However, it can be slower to lace and adjust, may feel stiffer, and requires a longer lace length than standard criss-cross lacing.

Variants exist that adjust how the horizontals align and how the vertical runs are directed, as well as which eyelets are used for the rungs. Overall, ladder lacing is primarily a functional choice, balancing fit, comfort, and lace longevity.
