LUTtiedot

LUTtiedot refers to the data that defines a lookup table (LUT) used to map input color values to output color values in digital imaging and related workflows. These data enable color transformations such as space conversions, color grading, and look development, allowing a consistent appearance across devices and applications.

There are two main types of LUTtiedot: 1D LUTtiedot, which map each color channel independently, and 3D LUTtiedot, which map combinations of red, green and blue values in a three-dimensional grid. 3D LUTtiedot are widely used for complex color grading, while 1D LUTtiedot are often employed for tonal corrections or gamma adjustments.

A LUTtiedot is typically organized as a grid of color values. In a 3D LUTtiedot, each entry provides an output RGB triplet corresponding to a specific input RGB coordinate within the color cube. Entries can be stored with different bit depths and may include metadata such as color space (for example Rec.709 or DCI-P3), primaries, white point, and the intended display device.

Common file formats for LUTtiedot include .cube, .3dl, and .lut, as well as plain text or proprietary formats used by specific software. The format dictates how the color data are laid out, how many entries exist, and how interpolation is performed when input values fall between grid points.

Usage involves applying LUTtiedot in the rendering or post-production pipeline, often with interpolation (e.g., trilinear) to produce smooth color transitions. Proper handling of color space and device characteristics is essential to maintain visual fidelity.
