LEDtaustavalolla, often shortened to LED backlight, refers to the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a light source for backlighting liquid crystal displays (LCDs). This technology has largely replaced older backlighting methods such as cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) in a wide range of electronic devices including televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, and tablets.

The primary advantage of LED backlighting is its energy efficiency. LEDs consume significantly less power compared to CCFLs, leading to longer battery life in portable devices and reduced electricity consumption for larger displays. Furthermore, LEDs are more durable and have a longer lifespan, contributing to the longevity of the display.

LED backlighting also allows for thinner and lighter display designs. Because LEDs are smaller and more compact than CCFL tubes, manufacturers can create sleeker devices. Another significant benefit is improved picture quality. LED backlighting enables better contrast ratios, deeper blacks, and more vibrant colors due to the ability to control individual zones of LEDs, a technique known as local dimming.

There are two main types of LED backlighting: edge-lit and direct-lit. In edge-lit systems, LEDs are placed along the edges of the display, and the light is diffused across the screen. In direct-lit systems, LEDs are arranged in a grid behind the entire screen, offering more precise control over brightness and contrast, especially with local dimming capabilities.
