LEDtaustavalaistuksessa refers to the use of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) as a backlight source for displays. This technology has largely replaced older backlight methods such as Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) in modern electronic devices like televisions, computer monitors, and mobile phones.

The primary advantage of LED backlighting is its energy efficiency. LEDs consume significantly less power compared to CCFLs, leading to extended battery life in portable devices and lower electricity bills for larger displays. Another benefit is improved image quality. LEDs can be controlled more precisely, allowing for deeper blacks and brighter whites, which results in a higher contrast ratio and more vibrant colors. This precise control is often achieved through techniques like local dimming, where specific zones of LEDs can be dimmed or turned off independently.

LED backlighting also offers several practical advantages. LEDs are more durable and have a longer lifespan than CCFLs, reducing the need for frequent replacements. They are also mercury-free, making them an environmentally friendlier option. Furthermore, LED panels can be made thinner and lighter, enabling the design of slimmer and more portable devices. There are different configurations of LED backlighting, including edge-lighting, where LEDs are placed along the edges of the display, and direct-lighting, where LEDs are spread across the entire back surface of the panel. Each configuration has its own trade-offs in terms of cost, thickness, and image performance.
