LASIKleikkaus, or LASIK surgery, is a widely performed ophthalmic surgical procedure used to correct refractive errors of the eye. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. The primary goal of the surgery is to reshape the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, to improve its focusing ability. This correction can alleviate or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses for many individuals.

The LASIK procedure typically involves two main steps. First, a thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea. This is usually done with a specialized laser called a femtosecond laser or a mechanical microkeratome. Once the flap is lifted, an excimer laser is used to precisely remove corneal tissue underneath. The amount of tissue removed is determined by the specific refractive error being corrected, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism. After the corneal tissue is ablated, the flap is carefully repositioned back into its original place, where it adheres naturally without the need for stitches.

LASIK is generally considered a safe and effective procedure. Most patients experience significant improvements in their vision shortly after surgery, with further stabilization occurring over the following weeks and months. As with any surgical intervention, there are potential risks and side effects, although they are relatively uncommon. These can include dry eyes, glare, halos, and in rare cases, infection or vision loss. A thorough pre-operative examination is crucial to determine if a patient is a suitable candidate for LASIK and to discuss the potential outcomes and risks.
