Lühilaineid, often translated as shortwave radio, refers to radio waves with frequencies ranging from 3 to 30 megahertz (MHz). This band is characterized by its ability to travel long distances, making it ideal for international broadcasting and communication. Unlike medium-wave or long-wave radio, shortwave signals can bounce off the ionosphere, a layer of charged particles in the Earth's upper atmosphere. This phenomenon, known as skywave propagation, allows signals to travel over the horizon and reach receivers thousands of kilometers away.

The effectiveness of shortwave propagation is highly dependent on various factors, including the time of day, season, and solar activity. During the day, the ionosphere is denser, which can absorb shorter shortwave frequencies, while longer frequencies may still propagate. At night, the ionosphere becomes less dense, allowing a wider range of shortwave frequencies to bounce. Solar flares and other solar events can significantly impact the ionosphere, sometimes enhancing propagation and other times disrupting it.

Shortwave radio has played a crucial role in global communication and information dissemination. Historically, it was a primary means for international news broadcasts, allowing people in different countries to receive information directly. It has also been used for military communications, maritime navigation, and by amateur radio enthusiasts for intercontinental contact.
