Lähivierot, known more commonly by its English equivalent "local area network" or LAN, refers to a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office building. The defining characteristic of a LAN is its geographical limitation, distinguishing it from wider networks like metropolitan area networks (MANs) or wide area networks (WANs).

LANs allow connected devices to share resources like internet connections, printers, and files. They are typically characterized by high data transfer speeds and relatively low latency compared to WANs due to the shorter distances involved. Common technologies used in wired LANs include Ethernet, while wireless LANs, or WLANs, utilize Wi-Fi standards.

The setup of a LAN can range from a simple peer-to-peer network connecting a few computers to a more complex infrastructure involving routers, switches, and servers in a corporate environment. Security is an important consideration for LANs, with measures often implemented to control access and protect data.
