Külglukud

Külglukud, also known as side locks or linkage locks, are a type of mechanical locking mechanism often found in various applications, particularly in older automotive systems and some industrial machinery. Their primary function is to secure a movable component or linkage in a fixed position. Unlike key-operated locks, külglukud typically employ a lever or a sliding bolt that is manually engaged and disengaged.

The design of a külglukud can vary, but a common principle involves a pin or bolt that extends into a corresponding recess or hole on the mating part. This engagement prevents unwanted movement. The lever or slide mechanism provides the force to insert or retract the pin. Engagement is often achieved by pushing a lever or sliding a bolt into place, while disengagement requires pulling the lever or sliding the bolt back. Some külglukud may incorporate a spring-loaded mechanism to aid in either engagement or disengagement, or to hold the lock in its engaged position.

Historically, külglukud were prevalent in vehicle door latches, trunk latches, and hood latches before the widespread adoption of more sophisticated locking systems. They were also used in the linkages of agricultural equipment and other machinery where a simple and robust method of securing a joint was required. While their use in modern consumer products has diminished due to advancements in security and convenience, they can still be found in certain specialized or legacy applications. The simplicity of their design makes them relatively easy to operate and maintain, though they generally offer a lower level of security compared to modern key or electronic locks.
