Kõrgpäästefilter, also known as a high-efficiency particulate air filter or HEPA filter, is a type of air filter that can remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers in diameter. This size is considered the most penetrating particle size, meaning that particles both larger and smaller than this are filtered out more easily. HEPA filters are commonly used in air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, and ventilation systems to improve indoor air quality. They are particularly effective at removing allergens, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, and other microscopic contaminants that can trigger respiratory problems and allergies. The effectiveness of a HEPA filter is determined by its ability to capture these small particles, which are often too small to be seen with the naked eye. The dense mesh of fibers within a HEPA filter traps these particles through a combination of impaction, interception, and diffusion. While often referred to as a single type of filter, HEPA filters can be constructed from various materials, most commonly fiberglass.
