Käsikäigukastidel, commonly known as manual transmissions or stick shifts, are a type of vehicle transmission that requires the driver to manually change gears using a gear stick and a clutch pedal. This system allows the driver to select the appropriate gear ratio for different driving conditions, such as accelerating from a standstill, cruising at higher speeds, or climbing hills. The clutch pedal disengages the engine from the transmission, allowing for a smooth transition between gears without damaging the components.

The core components of a manual transmission include gears, shafts, and synchronizers. The gears are arranged in sets to provide various ratios, with lower gears offering more torque for starting and higher gears providing more speed for cruising. The shafts transmit power from the engine to the wheels. Synchronizers are crucial for ensuring that gears mesh smoothly, preventing grinding noises and wear. When the driver shifts gears, the synchronizers pre-match the speed of the incoming gear to the speed of the output shaft before engagement.

Manual transmissions offer several advantages, including greater driver control over the vehicle's power delivery and often better fuel efficiency compared to older automatic transmissions. They are also generally simpler in design, which can lead to lower manufacturing costs and easier maintenance. However, they require more driver input and can be less convenient in stop-and-go traffic. The operation of a manual transmission involves coordinating the use of the clutch pedal, accelerator, and gear stick.
