Käiguvahetusel refers to the act of changing gears in a mechanical system, most commonly in a vehicle with a manual transmission. This process involves disengaging the current gear, selecting a new gear, and then re-engaging the transmission. The purpose of changing gears is to adjust the ratio between the engine's rotational speed and the driven wheels, allowing for optimal torque and speed for various driving conditions.

In a manual transmission, käiguvahetusel is typically performed by the driver using a clutch pedal and a gear shifter. Pressing the clutch pedal disengages the engine from the transmission, allowing the driver to move the gear shifter to the desired position. Releasing the clutch pedal then re-engages the engine with the transmission in the new gear. The sequence and timing of these actions are crucial for smooth and efficient gear changes.

Different gears provide different mechanical advantages. Lower gears, such as first or second, offer higher torque, which is beneficial for starting from a standstill or climbing steep inclines. Higher gears, such as fifth or sixth, offer lower torque but allow for higher speeds with lower engine RPMs, improving fuel efficiency during cruising. The driver must select the appropriate gear based on the vehicle's speed, engine load, and the desired acceleration or deceleration.

While manual transmissions are the most common context for käiguvahetusel, the concept also applies to other mechanical systems, such as bicycles, industrial machinery, and some types of automatic transmissions that still allow for manual gear selection. In automatic transmissions, the vehicle's computer typically manages gear changes, although many modern automatics offer a manual mode for driver control.
