Kylmätäytöt

Kylmätäytöt is a Finnish term used in dentistry to refer to temporary or interim dental fillings that are prepared and set at ambient temperature without the use of heat- or light-curing methods. The concept is distinguished from fillings that require heat or light activation during setting.

In practice, kylmätäytöt are commonly made from chemically cured materials such as zinc oxide–eugenol cement, glass ionomer cement, or ready-mixed zinc phosphate cements. These materials are mixed and placed into prepared cavities, shaped to restore form and occlusion, and allowed to set at room temperature. They are often used as temporary restorations, for example in pediatric dentistry, when a quick seal is needed, or as interim restorations after procedures like pulp therapy or root canal treatment until a definitive restoration can be placed.

Advantages of kylmätäytöt include simple handling, relatively low cost, and the absence of specialized equipment beyond basic dental instruments. Disadvantages include lower durability compared with permanent restorations, potential discoloration, the possibility of microleakage if the seal is not optimal, and limited suitability for high-load-bearing areas.

Clinical considerations involve assessing caries risk, patient age, and occlusion to determine suitability. Allergies or sensitivities to materials such as eugenol should be considered, and replacement with a definitive restoration is typically planned within a short-term horizon.
