Kupfererz

Kupfererz, or copper ore, designates naturally occurring rocks that contain copper-bearing minerals in concentrations sufficient for economically viable extraction. The most important copper-containing minerals are chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), bornite (Cu5FeS4), and chalcocite (Cu2S), together with oxide minerals such as malachite (Cu2(CO3)(OH)2) and cuprite (Cu2O). Copper ore occurs in various geological settings, notably porphyry copper deposits, volcanogenic massive sulfide belts, sediment-hosted deposits, and skarn systems. Grades vary widely, commonly from about 0.5% to several percent copper in sulfide ores; oxide ores can be richer but are more variable in distribution.

Mining and processing involve extraction, crushing, and grinding, followed by concentration through flotation to produce copper concentrate. The concentrate is smelted to blister copper and refined by electrolytic refining to high-purity copper metal. Some oxide ores can be treated by hydrometallurgical methods such as heap leaching and solvent extraction-electrodeposition (SX-EW). The global copper supply depends on large, often low-grade but extensive deposits, with major producers including Chile, Peru, China, Mexico, the United States, Australia, and Indonesia.

Environmental and social aspects include tailings management, water use, energy consumption, and emissions from smelting. Advances aim to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions, improve ore grade handling, and enhance recycling of copper from scrap. Kupfererz thus underpins a significant portion of modern electrical and industrial infrastructure, while remaining sensitive to price cycles and resource stewardship.
