Kultapinnoite

Kultapinnoite is a thin layer of gold deposited on a metal surface to create a gold-colored finish, improve corrosion resistance, or enhance electrical properties. The coating can be pure gold or an alloy and is typically only a few nanometers to a few micrometers thick, depending on the intended use. The gold layer is applied to a substrate such as copper, nickel, steel, or various alloys, often over an underlayer to improve adhesion and wear resistance.

The two main production methods are electroplating and electroless plating. Electroplating uses an electric current to drive gold ions from a bath onto the workpiece, while electroless plating deposits gold through a chemical reducing agent without external current. Some processes employ a base layer, such as nickel or copper, to enhance adhesion and durability. Thicknesses vary by application: jewelry and watches typically use thicker layers for appearance and longevity, while electronic connectors may require much thinner deposits.

Applications of kultapinnoite include jewelry and watches, decorative hardware, and electronic components such as connector contacts and printed circuit boards, where the gold layer reduces contact resistance and resists corrosion. It is also used in some medical and dental devices under specific biocompatibility and regulatory requirements.

Durability depends on coating thickness and wear conditions. While gold is resistant to tarnish, the underlying substrate can be exposed if the plating wears away. Proper care involves avoiding abrasive cleaners and extreme mechanical wear; re-plating is common when the decorative or conductive surface deteriorates. Environmental and safety considerations include the use of cyanide-containing baths in some processes, necessitating appropriate waste treatment and worker protection.
