Kryptografiaa is the discipline of securing information by transforming it into an unreadable form through cryptographic algorithms. It enables confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, and non-repudiation in communications and data storage.

Historically, cryptography evolved from classical ciphers to modern computational cryptography. Early methods relied on obscuring messages (substitution, transposition). The 20th century introduced formal theory and computational hardness assumptions. Public-key cryptography, including RSA and Diffie-Hellman, allowed secure key exchange without a shared secret. Elliptic curve cryptography offers similar security with smaller keys. The field also employs cryptographic hash functions and digital signatures for integrity and authentication. Quantum computing poses potential threats to some algorithms, driving post-quantum cryptography research.

Core concepts include encryption and decryption processes, keys (symmetric vs asymmetric), algorithms, and cryptographic primitives such as hash functions (SHA-...), MACs, digital signatures, and random number generation. Protocols and standards—like TLS for web security, PGP for email, and SSH for remote access—apply cryptography in real-world systems.

Kryptografiaa faces challenges such as key management, side-channel attacks, and evolving threat models. Ethical and legal considerations, including privacy rights and export controls, shape its use. Ongoing research seeks stronger primitives, efficient implementations, and quantum-resistant schemes.
