Quantum resistance is not proven by any algorithm; it is a security assumption based on current knowledge of quantum capabilities and cryptanalytic techniques. Practitioners talk in terms of security levels, or “bits of security,” recognizing that quantum speedups can alter the amount of work required for an attack. Achieving a target level of security against quantum adversaries may require larger classical keys or different primitives.

Post-quantum cryptography encompasses several families believed to be resistant to known quantum attacks, including lattice-based, code-based, multivariate, and hash-based constructions. Lattice-based schemes are prominent for key exchange and digital signatures, code-based approaches like Classic McEliece have long-standing security claims, hash-based signatures offer robust alternatives, and multivariate-quadratic schemes provide additional options. No single approach is universally superior; trade-offs in key sizes, performance, and integration influence selection.

Standards organizations, notably NIST, have undertaken formal processes to evaluate and standardize quantum-resistant algorithms for public-key encryption and digital signatures. Hybrid deployment models, which combine classical and quantum-resistant components, are often considered during the transition.
