This phenomenon is observed in a variety of materials, including plastics, wood, and certain metals. The degree of shrinkage depends on the material's composition, its initial state, and the environmental factors applied.

In plastics, krympningsförmåga is a critical consideration during the manufacturing process, particularly in injection molding. As molten plastic cools and solidifies, its molecules rearrange themselves, leading to a reduction in volume. This shrinkage can cause dimensional inaccuracies in the final product if not properly accounted for through mold design and process control.
