Krukodling

Krukodling, usually translated as container gardening, is the practice of cultivating plants in containers such as pots, troughs, and raised planters rather than directly in soil. It is widely used in urban environments, on balconies, rooftops, and small courtyards, as well as in temporary spaces such as schools or offices.

Historically, container gardening has roots in horticultural traditions that allow for mobility and soil control. In recent decades it has become central to urban farming movements, enabling year-round harvests in temperate climates with seasonal variations.

Successful krukodling relies on choosing appropriate containers with drainage and a high-quality potting mix; regular watering; and nutrient management. Soils must be well-draining and rich in organic matter. Fertilization is often more frequent than in-ground beds, using balanced or species-specific formulations. Because pots warm up and dry out faster, gardeners may use mulch, improved watering schedules, self-watering containers, or drip irrigation.

Common container materials include terracotta, plastic, ceramic, and composite materials. Weight, insulation, and wind exposure affect placement. Root depth must fit the plant; herbs and compact varieties are ideal for small pots, while larger fruiting plants require substantial containers. Pest and weather protection are easier in containers but require vigilance; frost can damage exposed pots and soil.

Common crops include herbs, leafy greens, determinate tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, and other small fruiting or ornamental plants.
