Kraftmodelle

Kraftmodelle, or kraft-cardboard models, are scale models predominantly constructed from kraft cardboard or kraft paper. They form a subset of kartonmodellbau (cardboard model building) and are defined by the use of durable brown kraft materials, often with pre-printed textures or markings. Models are typically assembled from flat sheets that are cut, scored, folded, and glued to form three-dimensional shapes.

Materials and methods commonly used include kraftkarton or heavy kraft paper, hobby knives, metal rulers, cutting mats, and glues such as PVA or white glue. Techniques emphasize scoring or creasing along fold lines, folding, and attaching tabs or interlocking joints. Some builds are reinforced with internal bracing, tape, or additional layers for stability. Finishing may involve painting, weathering, or applying decals and textures to improve realism.

Kraftmodelle cover a range of subjects, including architectural replicas, historical vehicles, ships, aircraft, and figures. Projects can be single-sheet designs or multi-sheet kits, and scales vary widely—from small, display-friendly sizes to larger formats. Common hobby scales include 1:87 (HO), 1:72, 1:50, and other widely used proportions.

History and distribution: kraft-modeling grew out of the broader paper and cardboard modeling traditions that gained popularity in the 20th century, with patterns and kits distributed by publishers and hobby magazines. Today, digital technology influences the hobby through printable PDFs, laser-cut files, and even 3D-printed components, while online communities share patterns, tutorials, and completed builds.

Advantages and limitations: Kraftmodelle are inexpensive, accessible to beginners, and well-suited for quick projects or educational purposes. They are lightweight and easy to transport but can be fragile, sensitive to moisture, and less durable than models built from rigid plastics or wood. Finishing quality depends on paper quality and crafting skill.
