Kraftbehovsprognoser are forecasts of the expected electricity demand for a given region and time horizon. They are produced to support grid operation, planning, and market activity by ensuring reliable power supply and informing decisions on generation, transmission, and reserves. The forecasts combine historical consumption data with various drivers of demand to produce estimates and, in many cases, probabilistic ranges.

Forecasts are produced across several time horizons. Short-term kraftbehovsprognoser cover hours to a few days and are used for real-time balancing, unit commitment, and procurement. Medium-term forecasts span weeks to months and support capacity planning, maintenance scheduling, and market bidding. Outputs typically consist of expected load plus uncertainty bounds, sometimes accompanied by scenarios.

Applications include determining reserve requirements, guiding market bids, scheduling generation and demand-side management, and informing transmission planning. Limitations arise from forecast errors, data quality, and unforeseen events such as extreme weather or rapid changes in consumption patterns. Continuous updating and validation are essential to maintain accuracy and reliability.
