Koszorúérérszkület

Koszorúérérszkület is a Hungarian term that translates to coronary artery calcification. It refers to the buildup of calcium deposits within the walls of the coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. This calcification is a common sign of atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by the hardening and narrowing of arteries.

The presence of coronary artery calcification is often an indicator of underlying coronary artery disease. While calcification itself doesn't directly block blood flow, it signifies the presence of plaque, which can progressively narrow the arteries over time. This narrowing can restrict blood flow to the heart, leading to symptoms like chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and in severe cases, heart attack.

Several factors contribute to the development of koszorúérérszkület. These include age, genetic predisposition, and lifestyle choices. Modifiable risk factors play a significant role and include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Diagnosis of coronary artery calcification is typically made using imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) scans, specifically coronary artery calcium scoring. This scoring system quantifies the amount of calcium present in the coronary arteries, providing an estimate of the extent of atherosclerosis. A higher calcium score generally indicates a greater risk of future cardiovascular events. Management focuses on addressing the underlying risk factors through lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medications to control cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes.
