Kostnaðarbætagreining

Kostnaðarbætagreining, also known as cost-benefit analysis, is a systematic process used to evaluate the desirability of a project or policy by comparing its expected costs with its expected benefits. The goal is to determine whether the anticipated benefits outweigh the anticipated costs, thus informing decision-making. This method is widely applied in various fields, including economics, business, public policy, and environmental management.

The process typically involves identifying all potential costs, both direct and indirect, tangible and intangible, associated with the project or policy. Similarly, all potential benefits are identified and quantified as much as possible. These costs and benefits are then usually expressed in monetary terms to allow for direct comparison. Various techniques, such as discounting future costs and benefits to their present value, are employed to account for the time value of money.

A positive net benefit, where total benefits exceed total costs, generally suggests that the project or policy is economically viable and should be pursued. Conversely, if costs are found to be greater than benefits, it may indicate that the undertaking is not worthwhile. However, cost-benefit analysis is not solely about financial outcomes; it can also incorporate social and environmental impacts. The effectiveness of cost-benefit analysis relies heavily on the accuracy of the estimations of costs and benefits, which can sometimes be challenging, especially for intangible factors.
