Estimation is the process of inferring the value of an unknown quantity using available data, prior information, and a chosen model or method. It aims to produce a plausible value rather than an exact measurement, acknowledging uncertainty arising from incomplete information or imperfect models. Estimation is foundational in statistics, data analysis, science, engineering, and decision making.

In statistics, estimation refers to determining parameters of a population distribution or model. Point estimation yields a single best guess for a parameter, while interval estimation provides a range that is believed to contain the true value with a specified probability. Common methods include maximum likelihood estimation, Bayesian estimation, method of moments, and least squares for regression problems. Estimators have characteristics such as unbiasedness, consistency, efficiency, and sufficiency that describe their long-run behavior and accuracy.

Estimation is accompanied by uncertainty, which can be quantified through confidence intervals or posterior distributions in Bayesian frameworks. The quality of an estimate depends on data quality, model appropriateness, and sample size. Bias, variance, and model misspecification can affect accuracy and reliability.

Beyond statistics, estimation appears in project management, economics, and everyday planning. Effort, cost, or duration estimates often rely on expert judgment, analogies with similar tasks, parametric models, or probabilistic methods like three-point estimates and planning with ranges.

Ethical and practical use requires clear communication of assumptions and uncertainty to support informed decision-making and risk assessment.
