Kortels

Kortels are a fictional term designating a family of compact, modular energy storage units used in off-grid and emergency power systems. The concept appears in science fiction and in some worldbuilding exercises as a practical solution for rapid deployment of electrical capacity in remote or disaster-affected areas. In these contexts, kortels are designed to be mass-produced, weather-resistant, and stackable to form larger energy banks.

Design: A kortel consists of a sealed battery module with integrated battery management and a standardized electrical interface. Modules can be connected in parallel or in series to achieve different voltages and capacities. They typically include cold-start capability, thermal management, and a simple digital interface for monitoring state of charge and health.

Variants: Editors and authors describe multiple variants, such as Kortel Basic for small-scale temporary use, Kortel Hybrid that includes solar charging, and Kortel High-Density for larger installations. Some designs feature modular inverters and plug-and-play expansion racks.

Applications: Kortels are depicted in rural electrification, disaster relief, temporary events, and remote research stations. They enable rapid setup, easier transport, and scalable energy storage aligned with microgrid concepts.

History and reception: The term emerged in speculative fiction in the late 21st century and has since appeared in worldbuilding communities as a generic term for compact energy storage devices. It has no official real-world standard at present.
