Korrodálódnak, or *corrosion*, refers to the gradual destruction of materials, primarily metals, due to chemical reactions with their environment. This process is a natural phenomenon that occurs when metals, such as iron, aluminum, or steel, interact with substances like oxygen, moisture, acids, or other corrosive agents. The most common form of corrosion is rusting, which affects iron and steel when exposed to oxygen and water, forming iron oxide—a brittle, reddish-brown compound that weakens the material over time.

Corrosion is influenced by several factors, including environmental conditions such as humidity, temperature, and the presence of pollutants like salt or sulfur compounds. Industrial settings, coastal areas, and regions with high acidity in the air or water are particularly prone to accelerated corrosion. Additionally, galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals in contact with an electrolyte (such as seawater) create a galvanic cell, accelerating the degradation of the more active metal.

While corrosion is often seen as detrimental, it can also be harnessed in controlled processes, such as the production of rust pigments in art or the intentional oxidation of metals for decorative purposes. To mitigate corrosion, protective measures like coatings (paint, varnish), plating (e.g., zinc or chromium), or the use of corrosion-resistant alloys (such as stainless steel) are commonly employed. Electrochemical protection methods, such as cathodic protection, are also used in large-scale structures like pipelines and ship hulls to prevent corrosion-induced failures.

Understanding and combating corrosion is essential in engineering, construction, and infrastructure maintenance to ensure longevity and safety. Research in materials science continues to develop new alloys and coatings to enhance resistance against corrosive environments.
