Korngränshärdning is a metallurgical phenomenon that describes the strengthening of a metal or alloy due to the presence of grain boundaries. These boundaries are interfaces where individual crystals, or grains, of the material meet. In many crystalline materials, grain boundaries act as obstacles to the movement of dislocations, which are linear defects in the crystal lattice that are responsible for plastic deformation.

When a metal is subjected to stress, dislocations move through the grains, allowing the material to deform.
