Kookospähkinäkuitua, known scientifically as coir, is a natural fiber extracted from the outer husk of a coconut. It is a byproduct of the coconut processing industry, primarily used for its durable and versatile properties. The extraction process typically involves retting the husks in water, followed by mechanical processing to separate the fibers.

Coir fibers are composed mainly of cellulose and lignin. They are known for their resistance to salt water and are naturally resistant to rot and decay. This makes them suitable for a wide range of applications, including horticulture, upholstery, and marine industries.

In horticulture, coir is widely used as a growing medium. It improves soil aeration and water retention, making it an excellent alternative to peat moss. It is often used in the production of potting mixes, seedling trays, and hydroponic systems. Its ability to hold moisture while allowing for drainage also helps prevent overwatering and root rot.

Beyond gardening, coir fibers are used to manufacture various products such as doormats, brushes, mattresses, and ropes. The coarser brown coir, obtained from mature coconuts, is typically used for making mats and brushes due to its strength. Finer white coir, from younger coconuts, is softer and more flexible, lending itself to applications like yarn and twine. The environmental benefits of coir include its biodegradability and the fact that it utilizes a waste product from coconut harvesting, contributing to sustainability.
