Kontrollitutkimuksia, often translated as controlled studies or comparative studies, are a fundamental research methodology used across various scientific disciplines. The core principle of a controlled study is to compare an experimental group, which receives a specific treatment or intervention, with a control group, which does not. This comparison allows researchers to isolate the effect of the intervention by minimizing the influence of other variables.

There are several types of controlled studies. In a randomized controlled trial (RCT), participants are randomly assigned to either the treatment or control group. Randomization helps to ensure that the groups are as similar as possible at the outset, reducing potential bias. Another type is a quasi-controlled study, where randomization is not possible or ethical. In such cases, researchers might use pre-existing groups or match participants based on certain characteristics.

The control group serves as a baseline for comparison. It helps researchers determine whether observed changes in the experimental group are truly due to the intervention or if they would have occurred naturally or due to other factors. Effective control groups can receive a placebo (an inactive substance), standard treatment, or no intervention at all, depending on the research question.
