The word combines kontinuitet or kontinuum with basert, signaling an emphasis on smooth variation and unbroken change across time, space, or state variables. It is used across science and engineering to distinguish approaches that rely on continuous representations from those that are discrete or stepwise.

In practice, kontinuerlig concepts appear in mathematics and applied disciplines through continuous variables, functions, and processes. Continuous-time models, differential equations, and integral formulations are typical examples, whereas discrete models rely on countable elements or time steps. The choice between continuous and discrete representations often depends on the problem context, computational resources, and the level of abstraction desired.

Applications of kontinumbaserte approaches span physics, engineering, economics, and computer science. In physics and engineering, continuum mechanics, fluid dynamics, and control theory frequently employ continuous models. In economics, continuous-time finance models describe asset dynamics, while computer graphics and robotics use continuous geometry and motion planning as starting points before discretization for computation.
