Discreteness is the quality or state of being discrete, meaning composed of separate, distinct parts with gaps between them, as opposed to continuity. In mathematics and related disciplines, discreteness often refers to objects that can be counted or separated into individual elements. A discrete structure may be finite or countably infinite, such as integers, graphs, or sets equipped with a discrete topology. By contrast, continuous structures, like real intervals, vary smoothly without distinct boundaries.

In discrete mathematics, the focus is on objects that have distinct components and do not require limits or infinitesimals to describe rates of change or proximity.

In computing and signal processing, discreteness arises in digital data and time-series: signals are sampled at discrete times to produce sequences of numbers; quantization maps continuous values to a finite set of levels. Discretization is the broader process of replacing a continuous problem with a discrete one, enabling computation. The sampling theorem guides how often to sample to preserve information; reconstruction filters attempt to recover the original signal.

In physics and related fields, discreteness is associated with quantization: many physical quantities take on discrete, indivisible values, such as energy levels in atoms. Lattice models and finite grids are common tools for simulating continuous systems.

Philosophically, discreteness is discussed in debates over whether time and space are fundamentally continuous or discrete. The term also appears in topology as discrete topology, in which every subset is open and each point is isolated.
