Kontaktusellenállásokat, or contact resistance, refers to the electrical resistance that occurs at the interface between two conductive materials when they are brought into contact. This resistance arises due to several factors, including the microscopic irregularities on the surfaces of the conductors, the presence of contaminants such as oxides or dirt, and the pressure applied at the contact point. Even highly polished surfaces are not perfectly flat at the atomic level, leading to a limited number of actual contact points, known as asperities. Current flow is then restricted to these small areas, increasing the overall resistance.

The magnitude of contact resistance can vary significantly depending on the materials involved, their surface conditions, and the applied load. Metals with high conductivity generally exhibit lower contact resistance, provided their surfaces are clean. For instance, clean copper in contact will have a much lower contact resistance than two oxidized aluminum surfaces. Increasing the pressure at the contact point can help deform the asperities, increasing the actual contact area and thereby reducing resistance.

Contact resistance is a critical parameter in many electrical and electronic applications. In switches and relays, high contact resistance can lead to power loss, overheating, and signal degradation. In power transmission systems, it can contribute to energy inefficiency. Conversely, in some specialized applications, controlled contact resistance might be utilized. Minimizing unwanted contact resistance often involves careful surface preparation, cleaning, and the use of appropriate contact materials and pressures.
