Konstitutiivista

Konstitutiivista is a Finnish adjective form (partitive) of konstitutiivinen, meaning constitutive. In Finnish academic and formal prose, konstitutiivista describes elements, rules, or features that constitute or form the essential character of a system, practice, or phenomenon. The term emphasizes that what is being described is not merely accidental or regulatory, but fundamental to the existence or identity of what is described.

In philosophy and social theory, konstitutiiviset säännöt are rules that create and sustain a practice or institution. They help define what counts as legitimate actions within a given domain and, by doing so, bring about the very possibility of the practice. This usage is often contrasted with regulatiiviset säännöt, which govern behavior in a pre-existing activity without constituting it. A classic illustration is a game like chess, where the rules that determine legal moves are constitutive of the game’s structure. Similarly, some social arrangements—such as money, property, or marriage—are described as being maintained by constitutive rules within a particular community.
