Konqueror

Konqueror is a web browser, file manager, and universal document viewer designed for the KDE desktop environment. It is part of the KDE Applications suite and provides a single interface for navigating the web, managing files, and viewing a range of document formats. Introduced in the late 1990s, Konqueror was built around KDE technologies to deliver a tightly integrated experience on Linux and other Unix-like systems.

Architecture and features: Konqueror uses the KParts component model to compose different functionalities in one window. It accesses resources through the KIO framework, enabling transparent access to local files and remote resources via protocols such as HTTP, FTP, SFTP, SMB, and more. The browser supports tabbed browsing, bookmarks, and multiple viewing modes that combine web and file management within a unified interface.

Rendering and viewing: Konqueror is based on the KHTML rendering engine, which provides HTML rendering and web page layout. Beyond web content, Konqueror serves as a universal viewer for KDE-supported document formats, allowing users to view PDFs, images, and other documents without launching separate applications.

Status: While Konqueror remains part of KDE Applications, its role as the default web browser has diminished as other engines and browsers gained prominence. Dolphin has become the primary KDE file manager in modern environments, with Konqueror commonly used for its integrated viewing capabilities or for users who prefer a single, all-in-one tool. Konqueror continues to be maintained to provide browser, file management, and document viewing functionality within the KDE ecosystem.

It runs on Linux and other Unix-like systems with Qt, and remains available in older and current KDE releases.
