Kompressziós

Kompressziós is the adjective form related to kompresszió, meaning the application of external pressure. In medical, textile, and engineering contexts, it denotes devices, garments, or techniques that exert controlled pressure on a body part—typically a limb—to influence circulation, support tissue, or stabilize structures.

In medical therapy, kompressziós terápia uses garments or bandages to apply graduated pressure, usually strongest at the ankle and decreasing up the leg. This helps improve venous return, reduce edema, and support healing after injuries or surgery. It is commonly prescribed for chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, lymphedema, post-thrombotic syndrome, and after operations. Compression can be used during the day or at night, depending on the condition.

Kompressziós ruházat and bandages come in various forms, including stockings, tights, sleeves, gloves, and cohesive bandages. They are made from elastic materials such as nylon and elastane, sometimes with cotton or wool. Compression is quantified in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) or kilopascals (kPa). Common classes range from mild (approximately 15–20 mmHg) to extra-firm (40–50 mmHg). Selection depends on diagnosis, limb measurements, and symptoms.

Fitting and safety: Proper sizing and professional guidance are important for effectiveness and safety. Ill-fitting garments can cause skin irritation, restricted blood flow, or neuropathic symptoms. Contraindications include significant arterial disease, acute dermatitis or infection in the treated area, and uncompensated heart failure with edema. Users should monitor skin and sensation and discontinue use if adverse effects occur.
