Kompostoitumisprosessi, also known as composting, is a natural process by which organic materials are broken down into a dark, crumbly substance called humus. This process is facilitated by microorganisms, primarily bacteria and fungi, which decompose the organic matter in the presence of oxygen. The process occurs in several stages, starting with the initial addition of organic materials, followed by the breakdown of complex organic compounds into simpler ones, and culminating in the formation of humus.

The composting process is influenced by several factors, including temperature, moisture content, oxygen availability, and the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of the materials being composted. Optimal composting conditions typically involve a temperature range of 50-70 degrees Celsius, a moisture content of around 50-60%, and a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of approximately 25-35 to 1. These conditions promote the growth of aerobic microorganisms, which are responsible for the breakdown of organic matter.

The end product of the composting process, humus, is rich in nutrients and beneficial microorganisms, making it an excellent soil amendment. It improves soil structure, enhances water retention, and promotes plant growth. Composting is an environmentally friendly waste management practice, as it reduces the volume of organic waste and prevents the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere.
