Modeling approaches range from abstract mathematical formulations to detailed simulations, with a bias toward capturing essential interactions rather than all details.

Complexity appears across fields, including biology (gene networks and ecosystems), economics and finance (interconnected markets), engineering (large distributed systems), urban planning, and climate science.
