Klamphus

Klamphus is a fictional genus of bioluminescent mushrooms described in speculative biology and science fiction literature. In common depictions, klamphus refers to saprotrophic basidiomycetes that colonize fallen hardwoods in temperate forests and coastal woodlands.

Fruit bodies are small to medium, with convex caps 2 to 6 cm across, colors ranging from pale cream to amber, and a moist, viscid surface when damp. The gills are closely spaced and descend slightly on a slender stem up to about 8 cm tall.

Klamphus is saprotrophic, feeding on decaying hardwoods such as birch and oak. In many depictions it forms mycelial networks beneath the litter layer and occasionally interacts with small invertebrates in nutrient cycles. Luminescence is intermittent, brightest at night in moist conditions.

Geographic range in fiction often centers on temperate North Hemisphere forests, including boreal and coastal zones.

Taxonomic placement varies between sources; some describe a family Klamphaceae within the order Agaricales, others place it as incertae sedis in fictional classifications. The taxonomy is intentionally inconsistent to reflect its status as a speculative construct.
