Kishu

Kishu, also known as Kishu Inu, is a breed of dog originating from Japan. It is one of six native Japanese breeds, recognized by the Nihon Ken Hozon Kai (NIPPO). The Kishu is a medium-sized dog, typically standing between 17 and 22 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 30 and 60 pounds. They are known for their muscular build, triangular ears, and curled or sickle-shaped tail. Their coat is usually white, though other colors like red, black, and brindle can occur.

Historically, the Kishu was bred for hunting medium to large game, such as deer and wild boar, in the mountainous regions of Wakayama Prefecture. Their agility, stamina, and keen senses made them effective hunters. They are known for their loyalty and devotion to their families, often forming strong bonds. Kishu dogs are generally alert and courageous, possessing a dignified and calm demeanor.

While not as widely known internationally as some other Japanese breeds like the Shiba Inu or Akita, the Kishu is cherished in its native country. They require regular exercise and mental stimulation to thrive. Their independent nature means they can be strong-willed, and early socialization and consistent training are important. The Kishu is generally a healthy breed with a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.
