Kirjoitusasema, also known as a typewriter, is a mechanical device used for writing text by striking type onto paper. It was invented by American inventor Christopher Latham Sholes in 1867, and it became widely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The typewriter consists of a keyboard, a mechanism to strike the type onto paper, and a carriage that moves the paper forward after each keystroke.

The QWERTY keyboard layout, which is still used on most modern keyboards, was designed for typewriters to prevent jamming.
