Kipinäpurkaus, also known as a spark discharge, is a transient electrical discharge that occurs through a gap of insulating medium, typically air, when the electric field strength exceeds the dielectric strength of the medium. This breakdown results in a rapid ionization of the medium, creating a conductive plasma channel through which an electrical current flows. The visible manifestation of this current flow is a spark, often accompanied by a characteristic sound and the emission of light and heat.

The process begins with the application of a sufficiently high voltage across the gap. This voltage creates an electric field that accelerates free electrons present in the insulating medium. These accelerated electrons collide with neutral atoms or molecules, knocking off more electrons in a process called ionization. This chain reaction, known as an avalanche, leads to a rapid increase in the number of charge carriers, making the medium conductive. Once a conductive path is established, a high current flows, creating the spark.

Kipinäpurkaus phenomena are observed in various natural and artificial settings. Lightning is a dramatic example of a large-scale spark discharge in the atmosphere. In technology, spark discharges are utilized in applications such as spark plugs in internal combustion engines, where they ignite the fuel-air mixture, and in spark erosion machining, a process used to shape hard metals. Uncontrolled spark discharges can also pose fire hazards and interfere with electronic equipment. The characteristics of a spark discharge, such as its duration, intensity, and energy, depend on factors including the voltage applied, the distance between electrodes, and the properties of the insulating medium.
