Kiirgusteraapia, also known as cryotherapy, is a medical treatment that involves exposing the body to subzero temperatures for a short period. The term originates from the Greek words "kryos" (meaning cold) and "therapeia" (meaning treatment). This therapy is commonly used for both therapeutic and performance-enhancing purposes, though its applications vary widely depending on the context.

The primary method of cryotherapy is whole-body cryotherapy (WBC), where an individual stands in a chamber filled with liquid nitrogen or cold air, typically between -110°C to -130°C, for 2 to 4 minutes. Localized cryotherapy, on the other hand, targets specific areas of the body, such as joints or muscles, using cryoprobes or ice packs. Another form is cryomassage, where cold tools are used to massage the body.

Research suggests that cryotherapy may help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and accelerate recovery after physical exertion or injury. Athletes often use it to improve performance and reduce muscle soreness. Additionally, some studies indicate potential benefits for conditions like arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and skin disorders such as psoriasis. However, evidence remains mixed, and more research is needed to fully understand its efficacy and long-term effects.

Potential side effects of cryotherapy include frostbite, skin irritation, or dizziness due to rapid temperature changes. It is generally not recommended for individuals with severe cardiovascular conditions, Raynaud’s phenomenon, or certain respiratory issues.
