Kiinteäpolttoväliset refers to a type of camera lens characterized by a fixed focal length. Unlike zoom lenses, which offer a range of focal lengths allowing for variable magnification and field of view, a prime lens has a single, unchangeable focal length. This means the photographer cannot zoom in or out with the lens itself; instead, they must physically move closer to or further away from the subject to adjust framing.

Prime lenses are often favored for their optical quality. Because they are designed for a specific focal length, manufacturers can optimize the lens design to minimize distortions, aberrations, and other optical imperfections. This often results in sharper images with better contrast and color rendition compared to zoom lenses, especially at comparable price points.

Another common characteristic of prime lenses is their wider maximum aperture. A wider aperture, indicated by a smaller f-number (e.g., f/1.8 or f/1.4), allows more light to enter the camera. This is advantageous in low-light conditions, enabling faster shutter speeds to prevent blur and allowing for a shallower depth of field, which creates a pleasing background blur (bokeh) that isolates the subject.

Despite their optical advantages, the lack of zoom functionality can be a limitation. Photographers using prime lenses need to be more deliberate with their composition and movement, often "zooming with their feet." This can encourage a more thoughtful approach to photography. Prime lenses are also generally more compact and lighter than their zoom counterparts.
