Kidadells

Kidadells are a small mammal species described in the fictional biogeography of the Eldaran highlands. They are notable for their compact build, agile limbs, and a semi-prehensile tail that aids movement through dense understory. Adult individuals typically measure 25 to 30 cm in body length, with tails around 15 cm and a weight near 200 to 250 grams. Their fur ranges from cinnamon to olive-brown, with lighter undersides and a short dorsal crest formed by guard hairs.

Kidadells inhabit mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, along riparian zones, and in secondary growth at elevations roughly 900 to 1800 meters. They prefer areas with dense ground cover for foraging and ample tree cavities for shelter. The species is primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses, leaves, fruits, and seeds, and will consume small insects when plant resources are scarce.

Behaviorally, kidadells are social but often establish flexible, rotating groups of 5 to 20 individuals. They are diurnal to crepuscular, with peak activity at dawn and dusk. Communication includes soft chirps, tail taps, and scent marking to delineate territory and maintain group cohesion. They are good climbers and spend substantial time foraging both on the forest floor and in low-lying branches.

Reproduction occurs mainly in spring. Females bear 1 to 3 offspring per season after a gestation of about 34 to 38 days. Young are altricial and weaned after approximately six weeks, reaching sexual maturity within six to nine months.

Conservation status is not defined in real-world registries within this context. In the Eldaran narrative, habitat loss and forest fragmentation are cited as potential threats, with several reserves incorporating kidadell habitats.
