Kettenharnisch

A Kettenharnisch, also known as chainmail or chainmail armor, is a type of protective clothing made from interlinked metal rings. Originating in ancient times, it was widely used throughout the medieval period by soldiers and knights due to its effective defense against cutting and stabbing weapons. The design typically involves thousands of small metal rings woven together in a pattern that provides flexibility and coverage.

Historically, chainmail was first developed by Celtic peoples and later adopted and refined by various cultures including the Romans, Byzantines, and medieval Europeans. The rings are usually made of iron or steel, and their sizes and weaving methods can vary depending on the period and region. The armor could be worn alone or combined with other protective gear such as helmets and plate armor for enhanced defense.

A typical Kettenharnisch covers the torso, shoulders, and upper arms, and sometimes extends to cover the thighs and legs. It offers excellent protection against slashing attacks while maintaining a relatively high degree of mobility. Despite its durability, chainmail was labor-intensive to produce, requiring significant craftsmanship.

By the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, advances in armor technology led to the gradual replacement of chainmail with plate armor. However, chainmail remained in use for certain roles, such as underarmour or in regions lacking access to more expensive plate armor. Today, it is mostly associated with historical reenactments and ceremonial purposes, serving as a symbol of medieval martial culture.
