They form a crucial part of the electricity distribution network, bridging the gap between high-voltage transmission lines and low-voltage service connections to buildings and infrastructure. These cables are designed to withstand the higher electrical stresses and environmental conditions associated with medium voltage levels.

An outer jacket, often made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene (PE), offers further protection against environmental factors such as moisture, chemicals, and UV radiation.
